SELECT-HD Trial Update

A promising step forward for the Huntington’s Disease Community

Wave Life Sciences Ltd. recently announced positive results from their SELECT-HD trial (NCT05032196), a global multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase 1b/2a clinical study that tested the safety and effectiveness of a new treatment, WVE-003, for people with early-stage Huntington’s disease (HD) carrying SNP3

About WVE-003:

WVE-003 is a treatment designed to specifically reduce the harmful mutant huntingtin (mHTT) protein in people with HD, while keeping the healthy wild-type huntingtin (wtHTT) protein intact. This is important because people with HD already have a lower level of the protective wtHTT protein, which is essential for brain function.

Key Results from SELECT-HD:

  • Safety and Tolerability: WVE-003 was found to be safe and well-tolerated, with no serious side effects reported.
  • Effectiveness: There was a significant reduction in the harmful mHTT protein. On average, the mHTT protein levels were reduced by 46% at 24 weeks and 44% at 28 weeks compared to a placebo.
  • Preservation of Healthy Protein: The levels of the healthy wtHTT protein remained stable throughout the 28-week study period, confirming that WVE-003 works as intended.
  • Clinical Benefits: The reduction in mHTT protein was linked to a slowing down of brain degeneration, which is a good sign for improving clinical outcomes like motor function.

What is next?

Wave Life Sciences is dedicated to moving WVE-003 towards fast approval and making it available for everyday use. They plan to discuss the results with regulatory authorities to establish a safe path for the further development of this promising treatment. The company expressed deep gratitude to the HD community, including the study participants, their families, and the study site staff, for their trust and support.
