Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month

Internationally, May is the awareness-raising month for Huntington’s disease. The driving force behind the May Awareness campaign is to provide all members of the Huntington’s community with an opportunity to connect and learn from each other as well as educating others not directly impacted by Huntington’s disease. Huntington’s Victoria was the first Australian Huntington’s disease specific organisation to join the May Awareness campaign in 2004 which has now expanded to include Light It Up 4 HD in 2017 and Go Blue May 22 since 2019.

Our events for May Awareness each year are:

Thank you all for making #MayAwarness campaign a huge success!!

One month since wrapping up our #MayAwarness campaign, Huntington’s Victoria extends its deepest gratitude to all our partners who participated in the “Light It Up for Huntington’s Disease” campaign. Your unwavering support and dedication have been instrumental in illuminating the path toward greater awareness and understanding of Huntington’s disease (HD).

Raising Awareness and Reducing Misunderstanding

Huntington’s disease is a progressive brain disorder affecting movement, cognition, and emotions. Unfortunately, misconceptions and a lack of awareness about HD often lead to misunderstanding and social injustice for those living with the disease and their families. This year, through the “Light It Up for Huntington’s Disease” campaign, landmarks and buildings worldwide were lit in blue and purple, symbolizing solidarity and hope.

The Power of Partnership

Our partners in Victoria played a fundamental role in this initiative. By lighting up buildings, sharing information on social media, hosting events, and engaging communities, you have helped spread awareness far and wide. This collective effort is crucial in breaking down the barriers of ignorance and stigma that all members of the HD community face every day.

Your Impact

Because of your participation, we have seen a significant increase in public awareness about Huntington’s disease. The illuminated landmarks captured public attention and ignited conversations about HD, leading to a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those affected. This increased awareness is a vital step towards reducing the misunderstanding and injustice experienced by the HD community.

A Collective Effort Towards Change

We believe that change is possible when we work together. The impact of “Light It Up for Huntington’s Disease” extends beyond the visual spectacle; it reflects a growing global movement toward compassion, education, and support for the HD community. Your involvement is not just appreciated but essential in continuing this momentum.

Looking Forward

As we move forward, we remain committed to raising awareness and advocating for those affected by Huntington’s disease. We are incredibly grateful to our partners for their unwavering support and dedication. Together, we can continue to shine a light on Huntington’s disease, fostering a world where understanding and justice prevail.
